BMI Calculator

This tool helps you check if your weight is in a healthy range for your height. It provides a quick assessment based on the World Health Organization (WHO) weight categories.

BMI = -- kg/m²

Last Updated: February 2026

How to Use This Tool

Calculating your Body Mass Index takes just a few seconds:

  1. Select Units: Use the tabs to switch between Standard (feet/pounds), Metric (cm/kg), or other units.
  2. Input Measurements: Enter your accurate height and current weight.
  3. Get Results: Click "Calculate BMI" to see where your weight falls on the standard health scale.

When Should You Use This Tool?

While BMI isn't a perfect diagnostic tool, it is excellent for specific scenarios:

  • General Health Screening: A quick way to see if you are statistically at a higher risk for lifestyle diseases.
  • Tracking Weight Loss Trends: Use it as a consistent baseline to monitor your progress over months or years.
  • Medical Prerequisites: Many insurance forms or medical screenings require a current BMI value.

Understanding Your BMI Results

Your result is compared against standard ranges established by health organizations to categorize weight status.

BMI Categories Reference

BMI Range (kg/m²) Category General Health Implications
Below 18.5 Underweight Possible nutritional risk or underlying health issues.
18.5 – 24.9 Normal Weight Associated with lowest risk of weight-related diseases.
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight Moderate increased risk of cardiovascular issues.
30.0 and Above Obesity Higher risk of metabolic diseases and hypertension.

How the Calculation Works

Transparency is important. The Body Mass Index is a simple mathematical ratio of your weight to your height. It is calculated using the formula: BMI = kg/m².

If you use pounds and inches, the calculator automatically converts them or uses the imperial formula: (Weight in lbs / Height in inches²) x 703. This ensures accuracy regardless of which measurement system you prefer.

Important Limitations

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. For example, a professional weightlifter may have a high BMI ("Obese" category) simply because muscle is denser than fat, despite having very low body fat. Conversely, elderly individuals might have a "Normal" BMI but have lost muscle mass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI calculated differently for men and women?

No, the mathematical formula is exactly the same for both genders. However, women physiologically tend to carry more essential body fat than men, so the health interpretation by a doctor might differ slightly.

Why does the calculator ask for my age?

We collect age to provide context, but the standard adult BMI formula does not change based on age. For children and teens (under 20), BMI needs to be interpreted using growth charts (percentiles), which this specific calculator does not display.

Does this tool replace a doctor's visit?

Absolutely not. This calculator provides a general estimate. For a true analysis of your health, body composition, and metabolic risks, consult a healthcare professional.
